An accidentally ruptured propane gas line forced the evacuation of six buildings downtown on Friday.

The leak occurred at 9:50 am as workers digging a trench in the alley between the Credit Union and Chantilly Kitchen Bed ‘n’ Bath hit the line with an excavator, Revelstoke Fire Rescue Service Chief Rob Girard said.

He said 13 members of the service and two trucks were mobilized and evacuated five of the six buildings affected. Credit Union staff evacuated themselves.

Girard said the leak was finally sealed by about 2 pm.

No one was injured during the incident.
