Canoe thief has a bad sense of humour

A local resident has lost a canoe that was chained to a tree on the Columbia River in the Westerburg Road area. It appears as if sometime within the last month an unknown person or persons cut the chain and left with the craft.

A statement from Staff Sgt. Jacquie Olsen said Wednesday that the culprits “were ‘kind enough’ to leave a note pinned to the tree advising that it had been borrowed and if they wanted the canoe back, to post it on The Stoke List.” Several postings on the popular website have failed to result in the canoe’s return.

The canoe is described as a red older model Viking fiberglass canoe. It has been patched.

If anyone has any information as to the location of this canoe, they are asked to contact the local detachment at 250.837.5255 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
