New bridge is just about crossable

The new pedestrian bridge over the Illecillewaet River is nearly finished. The decking is complete and workers are finishing the guard rails. Community Economic Development Director Alan Mason said Tuesday that he expects the Mark Kingsbury Bridge will be open to pedestrians this weekend. A formal opening will be held sometime this spring, he said. The span across the old CPR abutments was built and installed with more than $735,000 in grant money. Not a dime of local taxpayers' money was used to build the structure, which was thrown across the Illecillewaet last month. David F. Rooney photo
