Revelstoke Fire Rescue Service personnel swiftly and safely extinguished an early morning fire in a building on Cottonwood Street that contained extremely flammable and even explosive materials.

“Fire crews quickly actioned the fully involved structure (a garage/shop in the 1200 block of Cottonwood),” said Fire Chief Rob Girard.  “There was a significant amount of fire loading in the building such as petroleum liquid fuels, propane gas, acetylene gas, etc., which elevated the hazard to our firefighters (and) which we were definitely concerned about.”

He said no one was in the shop when 18 firefigghters, responding to a 911 call at 1:29 am, arrived on the scene with three fire engines. The used 24,000 gallons of water to extinguish and overhaul the fire in just under an hour, with only one minor injury to a firefighter.

The fire was confined to the building of origin on Cottonwood and is being investigated by the fire inspector.
