Looking for a special gift for that special someone this Christmas? If so, you may want to take a look at The Legends of Now: A Love Anthology, a collection of about 100 short stories and poems by local author Frieda Livesey that is perfect for the spiritual seeker.
“I’ve been writing all of my life,” she said in an interview. “But I started writing every day in 2005.”
Based in part on Frieda’s experiences with automatic writing, The Legends of Now should appeal to anybody 14 years of age and over “who’s interested in exploring their inner landscape,” she said.
Though fantastical in nature, her stories and poems express a yearning for spiritual fulfilment that most people can appreciate. That’s not surprising when you consider that Frieda teaches meditation at Balu Yoga on Monday evenings.
The experience of writing this 182-page book absorbed Frieda completely and almost all of the professional assistance she required she found locally. For months she spent weekly meetings with her editor, a local man, and found her cover art, an original painting, locally, too. It was painted by Rachel Kelly and the back jacket photo was taken by Jason Keerak. The book was designed by Fiona Raven of Vancouver.
“This has been like a birthing,” Frieda said. “When you’re pregnant having a baby can seem almost like an abstraction until you are actually holding the baby in your arms. That kind of what this experience is like. I didn’t feel an actual author until the books arrived.”
