He lost his match in the 60 kilograms Youth Category at Provincial Boxing Championships, but Revelstoke’s Connor Null won the Herb Speidel Memorial Trophy on Sunday.

The trophy is awarded to the boxers in the best bout and that clearly was the match up between Null and his opponent, Marcus Sandhu of Vancouver’s Astoria Boxing Club. The two young men were graceful and spirited fighters and the Revelstokians in the crowd were clearly Null’s ardent supporters. (You can view his fight below.)

“I think it was a pretty good fight,” the 16- year-old said afterwards.

Revelstoke Boxing Club’s Sam Lerose was very pleased with the way the two-day championship events played out.

“We had 80 boxers here,” he said of the event, which was the first one ever held in Revelstoke and only the second time they were held in the Interior.

With 300 seats at the club’s ring in the gym of the old Big Eddy School Saturday’s qualifying rounds were sold out  and three-quarters full on Sunday which Lerose thought was “a pretty good crowd here considering it’s Grey Cup Sunday.”

There were 10 bouts on Sunday and Null was the only Revelstoke Boxing Club member to qualify.

Sheldon Perris of the SA Bulldogs won the Youth 81 kg Category match against Chani Sahota of the Maple Ridge Boxing Club.

Jag Seehra of the Inner City Boxing Club defeated Nasimn Ahmed of the Queensborough Boxing Club in the Senior 60 kg Category.

Spenser Howard of the Thistletown Boxing Club beat Sasan Haghigat-joo of the Action Boxing Club in the Youth 64 kg Category.

Robbie Cusine of the Spruce Capital Boxing Club defeated David Funk of the Maple Ridge Boxing Club in the Senior 64 kg Category.

Simmy Garcha of the MorningStar Boxing Club beat Ryan Hormung of the SA Bulldogs Boxing Club in the Senior 69 kg Category.

Rbert Taylor of Olson’s Gym won his match against Ray Beaulieu of the Two Rivers Boxing Club in the Senior 75 kg Category.

Sean Kearney of Pep Boxing and Fitness beat Harley Mulvahill of the Williams Lake Boxing Club in the Senior 69 kg Category.

Aman Kang of the MorningStar Boxing Club was declared the winner in the Youth 75 kg Category when Jason Wiez of the SA Bulldogs Boxing Club failed to show up.

And in the main event — the Senior 81 kg Category — Thomas Spiers of the Spruce Capital Boxing Club defeated Aron McKenzie of Olson’s Gym.
