Roy was the third child born to James Kellie “Micky” MacQuarrie and May E. (Field) MacQuarrie on 15 Nov 1919 at Revelstoke, BC. He passed away August 20, 2011 in Salmon Arm, BC. Predeceased in 1980 by his first wife of more than 40 years Margaret (Williamson) MacQuarrie , their daughter Marnie MacQuarrie in 2005, sister Dorothy Koronko in 1987, a brother Gordon MacQuarrie in 2004, and a grandson David Stamer in 1989.
Roy is survived by a brother Donald MacQuarrie of Vancouver, BC; a sister Muriel Goodson of Prince George, BC; a son Roy George (Sonnia) MacQuarrie of Sicamous, BC; grandson Richard MacQuarrie, great granddaughters Taryn and Ryana of Calgary, AB; grandson Rodney (Robbi) MacQuarrie, great grandson Logan of Regina, SK; a daughter Valerie (Derek) Stamer of Barriere, BC, grandson Ward (Carleen) Stamer, great granddaughters Brittany and Nicole of Barriere, BC, grandson Cory (Deb) Stamer, great granddaughters Tiana and Trista of Barriere, BC, granddaughter Tricia Stamer of Vancouver BC; the children of his daughter Marnie MacQuarrie grandson Andrew (Aeva)Hamilton-MacQuarrie, great granddaughter Caroline of Victoria, BC and granddaughter Ashley (Scott) Hamilton-MacQuarrie of Smithers, BC,
Roy also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as long time friends who knew him as Cork or uncle Corky. He is also survived by his second wife Vicki of Salmon Arm, BC.
Roy’s formative years were spent in Revelstoke where he attended Selkirk, Central and Revelstoke High School. He was an avid skier and played High School basketball.
In 1939 he married his childhood sweetheart Margaret Williamson. During the war she accompanied him to his posting in Quebec and afterwards they resided in Revelstoke raising their three children.
He joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an ordinary seaman at the start of the war and was first trained as a cook. Always a top student, he rose quickly within the ranks ending his service as a Chief Petty Officer. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, having been a member for more than 65 years. One of the skills acquired during his navy service was the ability to repair radios, electric motors and small appliances. There was little electrical that he could not repair.
He worked for the electrical dept of the City of Revelstoke as an operator at the old power house on the Illecillewaet River as well as the diesel plant in town. When BC Hydro took over from the city, he worked for them until his retirement in 1977. During this time he was active on the executive of the Revelstoke Credit Union and Revelstoke Co-Op.
Always the busy man, he built a house for the family near the old CPR Icehouse, then completely renovated the then MacQuarrie Apartments on the corner of 1st Street and Orton Avenue. He then renovated the old United Church Manse at the corner of MacKenzie Ave and 6th Street as well as a summer home at Annis Bay near Sicamous where he lived until 1990. From 1990 to 2009 he and Vicki resided in Salmon Arm, BC until he was placed in Bastion Place due to failing health.
A special thank you to the staff of Bastion Place, Salmon Arm for their care and kindness to our father where he spent the last two years of his life.
Private family interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Revelstoke, BC with his parents.
