All but one of 39 groups seeking funding are guaranteed a piece of the pie

By David F. Rooney

All but one of the 39 groups that sought funding from the Columbia Basin Trust’s Affected Areas and Community Initiatives Program are assured of at least partial funding for their projects.

The only group that failed to receive any assured funding was the Stoke FM Radio Society’s novel proposal to set up a community FM radio station. It had sought $5,000. However, it does have some hope of receiving funding.

According to a recommendation from the team that evaluated all 39 of the applications for funding, the Stoke FM Radio Society could receive $2,000 in funding if it fulfills two conditions:

  1. it must obtain an FM broadcast licence from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission; and
  2. it must submit a completed business plan prior to December 31.

That money comes from a 2010 project that returned $2,000 to the CBT  on March 8 — too late to be included in the 2011 funding recommendations.

The proposed funding allocations were unveiled at City Council’s meeting as a Committee of the Whole (CoW) on Tuesday.  The CoW meeting allows the mayor and councillors to discuss issues and move them forward to the formal Council meetings where they are formally adopted — or rejected. These funding recommendations are unlikely to be rejected at next week’s Council meeting.

As anyone familiar with the local process understands, the members of non-profit groups making presentations at the Affected Areas and Community Initiatives Program evening, held this year on March 1, vote for what they regard as the top 10 projects. All submissions are examined by an evaluation team which recommends the actual funding levels. This year’s team consisted of Dale Morehouse, Linda Chell, Adelheid Bender, Pam Doyle and Edna-Mae Johnson. Their deliberations were observed by CBT Community Liaison Lynda Lafleur.

It is worth noting that 135 people attended this year’s public presentation. The Community Connections Food Bank had the highest level of support with 75 votes on the 108 completed voting forms submitted to the evaluation team.
