Three members of the Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club just returned from competition in the Master’s World Cup in Vernon, BC. This event took place March 3-10 2011, and is considered the world championship for international masters’ cross-country skiers. It is held in North America every eight years. The Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre near Silver Star hosted this event, with over 1100 skiers from around the world, including large contingents of skiers from the US, Russia, France, and Germany.
Sovereign Lakes delivered what it is known for, consistent and excellent ski conditions. Temperatures stayed a few degrees below zero every day, with mixed sun and cloud and small amounts of new snow through the week, making for excellent skating and classic tracks.
Nikki Norrie dusted off her Olympic form and was a formidable presence, on top of the podium for gold in her second event, the 10km free style. This victory earned her a spot on Canada’s relay team for the 4 x 5km race, in which she completed a skating leg and won another gold medal. Congratulations Nikki! Rory Luxmoore and Pete Smillie contested and completed a variety of free style and classic distances, sharing some sort of glory with the other skiers at the back of the pack.
