Avalanche safety should be on everyone’s mind

Avalanche safety is everyone’s business. That’s the message the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) is sending to mark this year’s Avalanche Awareness Days on Jan. 15 – 16, 2011. And judging by the unprecedented number of communities and groups participating this year, that message appears to be gaining momentum.

“We’ve got well over 40 communities marking Avalanche Awareness Days,” says CAC Operations Manager John Kelly. “There are more snowmobiling groups holding events than we’ve ever seen as well as a growing number of ski areas. This growth in the community events tells us that more people are taking ownership of this issue and helping us spread the word of awareness and education.”

In Revelstoke, there will be two events held — one for skiers at Revelstoke Mountain Resort and another for snowmobilers on Boulder Mountain. More information on community involvement can be found under the “events” tab on the CAC’s homepage at avalanche.ca.
