Claudette Kendel, Adult Academic and Career Preparation Coordinator at Okanagan College, was awarded the first Revelstoke Community Literacy Award on Thursday. Claudette retires this week after working for more than 20 years at the college.

At an open house and awards ceremony at the college, colleague Janet Lemieux described Claudette’s dedication and long hours of work on behalf of her students. Tracy Spannier, Revelstoke Literacy Action Committee chairperson, who presented the award, read the words of one of her nominees: Claudette “has inspired so many students in her time teaching at Okanagan College – including many adults who would otherwise never have completed their high school education. She sets the benchmark for what all good literacy advocates should be.”
