Fishy doings at Castle Joe Books

By David F. Rooney

Castle Joe Books owner Gwen Lips and I spent a number of weekends finishing the sturgeon and kokanee mural that now graces the wall at her book store.

It was a fun project for everyone concerned — particularly all the kids who painted rocks and kokanee and those who also painted wooden sturgeon during the North Columbia Environmental Society’s activities on Earth Day. Many of those painted sturgeons will be mounted on the wall as well.

Many thanks to the NCES and Castle Joe Books for sponsoring this community project and a special thank you to all the children who helped out.

You can see the painting, of course, at Castle Joe Books and here are photos of the mural being mounted by Travis Hunt and Rory Luxmoore:

Rory Luxmoore and Travis Hunt discuss how to mount the sturgeon mural produced for the wall at Castle Joe Books. The eight-foot by four-foot painting was designed by David Rooney and partially painted by local children on Earth Day. Rooney and Castle Joe Books owner Gwen Lips completed the mural over the intervening months and it was finally mounted on Canada Day. Photo courtesy of Sarah Newton

And here's the completed mural. Hunt and Luxmoore did the final touches on the frame. Aaron Chance is making the sign (a large sturgeon of course), and the little fish that were painted by local kids will go up soon too. Photo courtesy of Sarah Newton
