Mounties to tell seniors about scams

Alice Daniels

Hello, seniors of Revelstoke. First and foremost I want to apologize for the mistakes made in my last column.

The Selkirk Singers luncheon on Saturday, May 8, at noon is for Charlene Robinson and Marg Stovel. I apologize for the mix up, Marg. The Executive/Directors and members would also like to thank Charlene and Marg for all the hard work it has truly been a pleasure having you all perform at our birthday parties and other events that we have been able to hear the singers. Please enjoy your summer break and we look forward to hearing you all again in the fall.

Also the last birthday before our Summer break is the Wednesday, June 16 at 3 pm. This birthday party will be for those members who have birthdays in June and July.  I apologize for the confusion.  Don’t forget we will be having Menja Nicholson coming into speak to us about World Elder Abuse Awareness at the June/July Birthday party.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE CHANGE IN TIME FOR OUR GENERAL MEETING ON THURSDAY, MAY 13. IT WILL START AT 2 PM INSTEAD OF OUR USUAL 1:30 PM START TO ACCOMMODATE THE PYTHIAN SISTER’S LUNCHEON.  WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY CONFUSION THIS MAY CAUSE.

The first monthly Birthday party in the fall will be on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 3 pm, and this one will be for those members with birthdays in August/September. We look forward to seeing you all there in the fall.

Our May birthday party is on Wednesday, May 19 at 3 pm. We will be having someone from the RCMP on Seniors Scams and also someone from Victim Services coming into talk to us.

Please watch the bulletin boards for sign-up sheets for the following events and activities: computer classes, volunteers for the Pythian Sisters luncheon on Thursday, May 13. from 11 am until 1 pm, WII system classes, Dinner In and other things as well. Please pick up your monthly calendars at the Centre. They are in the slot on the outside of the main door or ask one of the Executive/Directors if there isn’t one available there.

We will be holding a Dinner In on Wednesday, May 26 at 5:30 pm. This will be a Pancake dinner, with sausages, toppings and desserts. The cost is $5 each person. Please plan on attending and watch to see if there will be other things going on afterwards.

On Monday, May 3, Ruth Boettger, Marlene Scarcelli and I had a meeting with Jill Zacharias in regards to the Volunteer Coordinator Project. We will be looking for someone for a minimum of a one-year commitment, for 18 hours a week at $20 an hour. There is a job description, as well as other information available from the Ruth, Alice, Marlene, or Jill if you maybe interested in this position.  You can also call 250-814-3875 or email Jill at jill.zacharias@telus.net. This position would be ideal for a Senior who would like to supplement their income, or has just finished the Work Experience program at the College. The deadline is Friday, May 21 at 12 noon so please forward a letter of application and resume to Jill at the above email address or drop it off at the Business Information Centre reception, at 204 Campbell St. So please take a look at the information on the Seniors bulletin boards if you are interested. This project is being done in partnership with The City of Revelstoke and the Revelstoke Senior Citizens’ Association.

On Thursday, May 20 at 7 pm the Genealogy Group is meeting at the Seniors Centre for a workshop, so please plan on attending.

BC Senior Games are in Campbell River this year and so far representing Zone 8 in darts is Linda Bruder in the ladies from 55 to 64 group, and Ruth Boettger in the ladies from 65 plus team. Congratulations to you both and we look forward to hearing all about it, and we all wish you both much luck. Have fun.

There are still some outstanding memberships so please make sure that you have renewed your membership in order to remain a member in good standing.

Also, please remember without a membership when it comes time for our elections in November there maybe a problem with you being allowed to vote and attend the meeting.

Again I want to apologize for the mistakes I made in my last column and apologize for any confusion this may have caused anyone. I look forward to seeing you all at our events and activities. Please have a safe and happy May long weekend.  There will probably be only one more column before our break and it will be around the first and second week of June. I will try to make sure that at least one column is in before September to give everyone updates and a rundown of what September will look like at your Centre. So please watch for it and plan on attending our fall activities and events.

Please have a happy and safe May, and a very happy and safe May long weekend coming up from May 21 to 23 inclusive.
