Firefighters responding to an alarm were greeted by heavy black smoke venting from the windows and doors of the house at 716 Fifth Street East on Thursday afternoon.
Upon arrival at about 3:34 pm fire crews found heavy black smoke venting from the windows and doors of the structure.
“There were two occupants in the home at the time of the incident,” Roger Echlin of the Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services said in a statement. “Both occupants were able to escape the structure without injury.”
He said 21 members, two engines, one tender and a command vehicle responded to the fire. Firefighters made an offensive fire attack quickly extinguishing the flames.
“The cause of the fire was determined to be the misuse of a source of ignition,” Echlin said. “Spilled flammable liquids that were used to ignite the contents of a wood stove ignited adjacent combustibles and quickly engulfed the basement creating heavy smoke throughout the structure.”
