Bang! A derailment near Burger Junction

By David F. Rooney

A hellaciously loud bang that rattled windows and woke people up in the Farwell neighbourhood Monday night may have been caused when a set of eastbound units ran into the tail end of the eastbound train that was stopped at the Canadian Pacific Railway overpass over Victoria Road.

Fortunately, the cars that were derailed were empty potash cars — not propane or other hazardous material containers.

Workers laboured through the evening and for much of Monday morning to remove the cars.

A spokesman for the CPR could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

Here are several images of the removal operation. The Current is grateful to Ron Blais for providing a photo of a badly damaged car before it was pushed off the track.

One was badly crumpled and was overturned and pushed off the rails. The other (the one on the right) was lifted back onto the rails and taken back to the rail yard. David F. Rooney photo
