A three-vehicle accident on the Trans-Canada Highway early Wednesday morning has left two people dead.

“The initial investigation has indicated that an eastbound semi crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound tractor trailer unit,” Cpl. Rod Wiebe of the Revelstoke RCMP detachment said in a statement. “The 29-year-old driver and the 39-year-old passenger in the eastbound semi died at the scene as a result of their injuries. Both individuals were from Calgary.”

He said the driver of the westbound truck and the driver of a semi following the eastbound truck were not injured in the crash, which occurred 25 kilometres east of town near the first snow shed.

“This third vehicle involved was caught in the debris field which was about 200 meters long,” Wiebe said in a statement. “While the cause of the crash is unknown there has been an indication that the eastbound tractor trailer unit was being driven erratically prior to this incident.”

The Revelstoke RCMP along with the BC Coroner Service and a collision reconstructionist from the RCMP’s Southeast District Traffic Services are continuing the investigation.

Names of the deceased are being withheld pending the notification of their next of kin.
