The Revelstoke Hockeyville 2010 Committee is looking a for a few good words — for a slogan that is.

“Someone out there has the perfect slogan rattling around in their head — and the campaign needs it,” Committee Chairman Gary McLaughlin said after a committee meeting Wednesday afternoon. “So what we’re going to do is ask people to go to our Facebook page (located at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155104665479&ref=mf) and post their slogan by next Friday (Oct. 30). If your slogan is chosen by the committee you’ll be credited in our promotions as the author.

That’s a pretty good deal and who knows? Fame and fortune may follow. Well, local fame for sure. Fortune? Maybe not, but who knows?

McLaughlin said the committee is rapidly getting organized. So far, it consists of himself, Dennis Berarducci, Jamie Perreault, Alan Chell, Brenda Diebert and Eric Scarcella. Berarducci is working on a 500-word submission that describes Revelstoke’s love affair with the great game and Scarcella is hunting for the three perfect photos to accompany the submission. Both will be sent to Kraft Hockeyville officials as part of the committee’s application to have Revelstoke added to the map of official Hockeyville contenders.

McLaughlin has been quick to enlist the aid of local businesses, City Council, the high school and ordinary citizens and hockey lovers throughout Revelstoke. And he’s using social media such as Twitter and Facebook to help him do that. The Twitter account is at www.twitter.com/revyhockeyville and the Revelstoke Hockeyville 2010 Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155104665479&ref=mf has already gained more than 415 members since it was started just three days ago.

So, start dusting off your memories and your old photos of hockey in Revelstoke. Once Revelstoke’s bid is accepted and the campaign becomes official, the committee will be asking everyone to send in their stories and photos about hockey in our community. Were you one of the kids who, like Berarducci, learned to skate on the Columbia River in the pre-dam era? Or did you learn to skate in the Forum or even on one of the skating rinks that preceded it? Inquiring minds on the Revelstoke Hockeyville 2010 Committee will want to know! And don’t forget to submit your suggestion for a slogan to the committee’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155104665479&ref=mf.

Here’s a quick update:

More than 460 people have now joined the Hockeyville Facebook page since Wednesday. That’s something like 45+ people in one day!

And here’s something to mark on your calendar: Gary McLaughlin reports that: November 6, 2009 will be Revelstoke Hockeyville night at the Grizzlies game and we want the place filled!”  Stay tuned.
