Can YOU write the perfect Hockeyville slogan? Come on… you know you can…

By David F. Rooney

With just three days to go before the Revelstoke Hockeyville 2010 Committee ends its slogan competition it thought it would be a great idea to let you know what kind of slogans are floating around out there.

Maybe you think you can do a better job than the folks who have submitted their ideas. If that’s the case be sure and send your slogan to the committee’s Facebook page located at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155104665479&ref=mf before the end of business on Friday.

Gary McLaughlin, chairman of the committee, says the slogans have to do two things:

1) they really should focus on the word “story” in some way; and

2) they need to express something about hockey as it relates to our community.

That’s tough… but not that tough. My own suggestion is this: Hockeyville. It’s our story.

The other thing the committee wants its supporters — and the committee presumes that its supporters include virtually everyone in town — to think about (and only think about for the moment) is how they will tell their own story about hockey, what it means to them personally and what it means to the community. Because in a lot of ways that’s exactly what the Kraft Hockeyville Competition is all about: who can tell the best stories about hockey and its meaning. Those stories can be told in a lot of ways: with words, with art, with photos, with all kinds of things that express the importance of hockey to you, your family and our community. Start thinking about this now because if and when Revelstoke’s bid is accepted the committee will start asking all of you to send in your stories, photos, et cetera.

As regular readers of The Revelstoke Current know, I make short little videos of local events. One story I’d like to try and make would be a video that shows the history of hockey in Revelstoke. In order to do that I’d need to get hold of old home movies of you or your kids on the ice. Does anyone reading this have old home movies like that, especially ones from the 1940s, ’50s, ’60s or ’70s? If the committee had access to old home movies like that we could craft a really interesting video that would tell a story all by itself. If you have some or know someone who does please e-mail me at drooney1@telus.net.

Now… back to the slogans. Here are the ones we have received so far. We’re not telling you who wrote them but we are interested in knowing if you think you can do a better job. If you can write a better one please send it to the Revelstoke Hockeyville 2010 Committee’s page on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155104665479&ref=mf.
