Discovery Centre closed ’til November

The Rogers Pass Discovery Centre in Glacier National Park is closed for construction from Sept. 9 to Nov. 15, 2009, says a statement from Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks.

Parks Canada staff are on duty from 10 am to 6 pm at the Illecillewaet Campground and Trailhead Office to provide visitors with information about the parks.

The Discovery Centre is undergoing a major project to improve the timber frame structure of the building. The contractor for this phase of the work is Everest Construction of Calgary.

The Discovery Centre will be closed again in April and May 2010, and September and October 2010 to complete the project, which includes:  replacement of floors, repair of the roof, replacement of the heating and electrical systems, and replacement of doors, windows and other building elements.

Funding for this project is provided by Canada`s Economic Action Plan.

The Illecillewaet Campground remains closed due to extensive damage caused by fallen trees and debris during the September 3rd windstorm.  Fallen trees must be cut and removed and any potentially hazardous trees rendered safe, before we can re-open the campground. Public safety remains our top priority and we do not have an estimated re-opening date at this time.

Trailhead parking at the Illecillewaet campground is still accessible.  Staff are on duty at the Illecillewaet Campground and Trailhead Office from10 am to 6 pm to direct campers to alternate campsites in Glacier National Park.

The Loop Brook Campground is now open and the Mount Sir Donald Campground will remain open throughout September.

Updates will be issued as new information becomes available.
