Galena Bay fire evacuation alerts rescinded

The Galena Bay fire is reported to be 40 per cent contained and evacuation alerts that were issued Aug. 1 for the Halcyon Hot Springs area are now rescinded, according to information posted at the Ministry of Forests and Range’s wild fire management website, http://bcwildfire.ca.

However, this does not mean the 2,084-hectare fire is any means out. It remains active and the Halfway River and Saint Leon Forest Service roads remain closed to protect public safety and facilitate fire management activities.

Smoke from the fire, which is three kilometres south of the Galena Bay ferry landing on the east side of the Columbia River is visible across the region. It may affect travel along Highway 23 and 31. Motorists are urged to contact the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure at www.drivebc.ca or to call 1-800-550-4997 before travelling in the area.
