Eight organizations are campaigning to have BC’s municipalities “phase out” sales of bottled water at their facilities.
The groups, which include the BC Government Employees Union, the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Polaris Institute and the BC Teachers’ Federation, sent City Council a letter recently asking it to back a resolution by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to do away with bottled water sales where potable public water is available.
According to information provided to Council 48 cities and towns across the country have already restricted bottle water sales as have 32 universities and colleges.
Council received the letter as information during its June 23 meeting. No action appears to be contemplated at this time.
