Adventure beckons at summer teen camps

Local teens between the ages of 13 and 18 will have plenty of things to keep them active — and outdoors — this month with the Community Connections Youth Events program.

There are eight events planned for young Revelstokians in July.

The fun gets underway on Friday, July 3) with a trip to the Vernon Waterslide from 8 am until 4 pm. Participating teens must register in advance and meet at Community Connections to catch the 15-passenger van that will whisk them off to waterslide heaven. there is a cost of $15 for this event.

On Wednesday, July 8, there is a free Picnic in the Park at Queen Elizabeth Park from 1:30 until 4:30 pm. Advance registration is not required and there will be food, plenty of things to drink, games, art and more.

Teenagers eager to shoot something can register in advance for five hours of paintball from 9 am until 2 pm on Friday, July 10. $30 gets you 500 paintballs, a mask, a gun and CO2 cartridges. Participants must meet at Community Connections at 9 am and should wear long-sleeved shirts and paints to protect themselves from paintballs.

If exploring the tops of the mighty trees in our mountains forests appeal to you then you should sign up in advance for the Sky Trek event from 9 am until 3 pm on Monday, July 13. That, too, is $30 and it is sure to test your skills and courage on the rope course. Participants must meet at Community Connections at 9 am.

Kids who enjoy art will be especially interested to know that there will be a Community Art Project for them to engage in on Friday, July 17. Advance registration is required and young artists must meet at Community Connections at 9 am. This special event runs until noon and is free of charge.

An overnight camping trip to Blanket Creek is in the cards for Friday and Saturday, July 24-25, There is a $15 charge for this event and it is limited to teens between the ages of 14 and 18. Campers must register in advance and must meet at Community Connections by 12:30 pm on Friday. They will be returned to Community Connections at noon on Saturday.

Teens can test their endurance with a hike to Begbie Falls from 1 pm until 4 pm on Wednesday, July 29. This event is free but advance registration is required.

And, finally, July ends on Friday, July 31, with a Teen Drop-in Event at Community Connections from 1 pm until 4 pm. Pizza and chicken wings are on the menu and there will be pool, ping pong, air hockey, games and a great chance to talk at this free event.
