The Revelstoke RCMP received report on Thursday, March 27, at approximately 8 pm of a dog killed by a cougar behind a residence on Alpine Lane East.
A statement from RCMP Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky said the incident occurred when the owners let their dog out to go into back yard and shortly thereafter the dog was heard barking. Attempts were made to call the dog back inside when a brief yelp was heard. Their dog did not return. The remains of the dog, believed to be a schnauzer, were found the following day.
The RCMP and Conservation Officers were able to confirm that the tracks made by the animal were from a cougar. Alpine Lane is located just off of the Trans-Canada Highway just east of the junction with Highway 23N. The cougar’s activity has not been noted since, however, cougars do occasionally come into town and have been spotted as central as Fourth Street East and the Centennial Park ball diamonds.
